1 CONC THE WHIDDON FAMILY 
1 CONT Lott Whiddon, his wife Judea and four children settled about a mile from 
1 CONC Irwinville, on lot 41, in 1824. 
1 CONT
1 CONT Lott Whiddon was the son of William Whiddon who came from England to 
1 CONC South Carolina, and married Mary Eason. They moved to Emanuel county 
1 CONC where Lott, Eli, Dempsey, John, William, Unie, Winnie, Feraby, Susie and 
1 CONC Betsy were born. Lott was born Dec. 26, 1796; he married Judea Dorminy, 
1 CONC who was born in Emanuel county, Oct. 28, 1796. She was the daughter of 
1 CONC John Dorminey, who married Rachael Bradford. The Dorminy's were of German 
1 CONC descent who accompanied the Salzburgers that settled in Emanuel county; 
1 CONC Eli and John, sons of William Whiddon Sr., went to Florida. Demsey went 
1 CONC to Washington county; William went to Alabama; Feraby married a man named 
1 CONC Lewis; they went to Alabama. Betsy and Susie married Barwicks and 
1 CONC remained in Emanuel county.

1 CONT Lott and his wife were poor in this world's goods and rich in health and 
1 CONC youthful habitat. They. decided to abandon their native heath and venture 
1 CONC in the land of sunshine and opportunities. They crossed the Ocmulgee 
1 CONC river in a flat with their hous-hold goods and other necessities and 
1 CONC built a log house in the forest. Their children, Elias, Mary, Feraby and 
1 CONC William accompanied them participating in all the struggles and hardships 
1 CONC of frontier; life. A daughter was born in their new home she was named 
1 CONC Rachael. After remaining in Irwin county some time, Lott decided to visit 
1 CONC his old home in Emanuel county, returning with a bunch of cattle, 
1 CONC accompanied by his father-in-law, John Dorminy. Mr. Dorminy persuaded 
1 CONC Lott to trade him his home. and moved his family there; while Lott, in 
1 CONC the meantime traded with Mr. Wallace for lot 39, where he built a log 
1 CONC house near the place where the cemetery now is at Irwinville in which the 
1 CONC remains of Walton Clement., Ora Clements and others are at rest.

1 CONT John Dorminy and family occupied the place procured from Lott Whiddon, 
1 CONC where both John and his faithwife died and were buried.

1 CONT Lott Whiddon remained in Irwinville several years where Martha Vann was 
1 CONC born, who was the first child born in Irwinville.

1 CONT The old pioneers brought Sycamore trees from their native country and 
1 CONC planted them at Irwinville where they are today.

1 CONT Mrs. Judea Whiddon cut a switch from one of the trees at Irwinville using 
1 CONC it as a riding whip, She stuck it in the ground at the place where 
1 CONC Sycamore now stands and the city derived its name from the switch, which 
1 CONC grew into a large , tree.

1 CONT Lott Whiddon and his family moved to Sycamore, leaving Irwinville, where 
1 CONC Dan Luke and his family then took possession of the Irwinville lot. 
1 CONT
1 CONT When Martha Vann was three months old, in 1829, they arrived at their new 
1 CONC home. The nearest neighbors were fifteen miles away. Hat creek was an 
1 CONC Indian camp. Their camp fires could be seen from Sycamore very plainly. 
1 CONC The nearest court house was at Jacksonville, on the other side of the 
1 CONC Ocmulgee River. 
1 CONT
1 CONT The first court held in Irwin county convened on the front porch, of Mr. 
1 CONC McDuffie, where William Dorminy's home is now situated. Then a log house 
1 CONC was built at Irwinville, which stood until replaced by a more modern 
1 CONC frame structure that was utilized as a court house until a change of the 
1 CONC county seat to Ocilla.

1 CONT Jim Wallace moved to the place owned by the late Geo. Young; it was known 
1 CONC as Wallace's mill, In later years, Jake Young, son of Geo. Young, moved. 
1 CONC there built a house and resided there until he moved to Sylvester where 
1 CONC he was killed while marshal of that town. Mrs. Wiley Branch Sr., 
1 CONC inherited the place after her father's death. She was a daughter of Geo. 
1 CONC Young. Her son-in-law, Ed. Ritchie, purchased the place. It! is situated 
1 CONC on the Alapaha river with good fishing and camping grounds. and 
1 CONC patronized by the sporting fraternity.

1 CONT Lott Whiddon and family prospered at Sycamore, where Susan, Jim, Unie and 
1 CONC Louisa Jane were born. He died June 22, 1880, at the home of his son Jim, 
1 CONC near Little river, His faithful wife and companion died August 8, 1886, 
1 CONC at the home of Capt. Jack Henderson, her son-in-law, who had become 
1 CONC proprietor of the old homestead that Lott and his wife had converted from 
1 CONC the piney woods into a habitable settlement. They both were buried at 
1 CONC Hickory Springs. They were the first settlers that crossed the Alapaha 
1 CONC river.

1 CONT Elias Whiddon, the eldest son of Lott Whiddon, married Nancy Fletcher, 
1 CONC daughter of Joe Fletcher. They settled four miles north of Sycamore at a 
1 CONC place called Peckville, where both died with measles and were buried. 
1 CONC Their children were: Judy, Polly, John, Lott, Susie, Jim, Millie and 
1 CONC Rachel. Judy married _afe Lambert. They had no children. Polly married 
1 CONC Zara Paulk, father of Jesse and Geo. F. John and Lott died in the war. 
1 CONC Susie married Dave Clements, of Irwin County, Millie married James Paulk, 
1 CONC Jr. Of Irwin county. She died. She was the mother of J.M. Paulk, of 
1 CONC Tifton, Cashier of the Citizen's Bank, and Ivey Paulk, both deceased. Jim 
1 CONC , the youngest son of Elias Whiddon, son of Lott, married Frankie Gibbs. 
1 CONC She died, leaving Rachel, who married Tim Paulk near Ocilla; Kate, 
1 CONC married ______ Brown, of Sycamore, Henry and Judy.

1 CONT Rachel, daughter of Elias married Jim Pate, of Cordele Their children 
1 CONC are: Mary, John and Zacharia. Mary, the oldest daughter of Lott Whiddon 
1 CONC married Manasseh Henderson, son of Uncle Dan Henderson. They purchased 
1 CONC land from Ashley Hamilton, son of Ben Hamilton. Ashley had the first 
1 CONC saloon in Ashburn after whom Ashburn was named. His father Ben Hamilton, 
1 CONC was a wealthy farmer and land agent at the place where Cordele -now 
1 CONC stands. He sold the land to Joe Brown, the War Governor, and the father 
1 CONC of "Little Joe" Brown, Governor of Georgia.

1 CONT Mary and her husband began life in a very humble cottage, with cattle she 
1 CONC received from her parents and some he owned. They were thrifty an 
1 CONC accumulated wealth, land and stock. He died directly after the war. She 
1 CONC lived almost a century. becoming afflicted with small-pox, to which she 
1 CONC succumbed at her home near Ashburn in 1909, attended by her nephew, Elias 
1 CONC Whiddon and family, They had no children.

1 CONT General John C. Breckenridge spent the night at that house, when Jeff 
1 CONC Davis was captured next morning. He slept with his gun loaded lying near 
1 CONC him He never removed his clothes. Davis was captured and Breckenridge 
1 CONC escaped, re- turning to Kentucky after the war.

1 CONT Feraby daughter of Lott Whiddon, married Captain Dan Hender son, brother 
1 CONC of Manasseh. He represented Irwin county in the legislature in the early 
1 CONC seventies. She became the mother of a large and influential family of 
1 CONC children. (See Henderson's )

1 CONT William; son of Lott Whiddon married Elizabeth Ford, daughter of Green 
1 CONC Ford. Their children are : Silvia, Elias, Green, Beatrice, Robert Mary

1 CONC Loldy. He died in 1891. leaving a large family., She still resides in the 
1 CONC old log house, now renovated, that was built by her husband when they 
1 CONC first married, sixty years ago, near Willacoochee creek. She became the 
1 CONC mother of a large family.

1 CONT Susan, another daughter of Lott married John Jackson Henderson, eon of 
1 CONC old John Henderson. She has become the mother of a large, prosperous 
1 CONC family. Her son, Jim, represents Turner county. Her daughter, Unie,

1 CONT Jim, son of Lott, better known at present as ' Uncle Jim," of Whiddon's 
1 CONC Mill, married Lucy Branch daughter of Dave Branch, a pioneer of Appling 
1 CONC county. They lived at Waterloo until after the war, when they settled at 
1 CONC the place they still occupy, near Little river. They had a. large family- 
1 CONC some died-those that remain are, John J., Dave W., Dempsey, Jim Buck, 
1 CONC William Lott, Frank, Unie, Juilia, Reecy and Georgiana.

1 CONT John Jackson, oldest son of Jim Whiddon married Jane Sumner, the daughter 
1 CONC of Dan Sumner. Their children were John, Elsa, Daisy and Dolly. John

1 CONT Elsa married Lizzie Aiken, daughter of W. Akin, of Tift county. She died.

1 CONC married Narcissa Vickers, daughter of Rev. Jack Vickers. Their children 
1 CONC are: Annibell, married Preston Whaley; Arthur married Nora Phelps; Martha 
1 CONC , who married Tullie Sutton who wa killed by Wm. Sumner in 1910. The jury 
1 CONC exonerated Sumner declaring it a justifiable homicide. Ava married Jim 
1 CONC Akin. Lester, Mary, Lott and more small ones single.

1 CONC Andrew Bird, farmer, banker, merchant, mayor and legislator was born in 
1 CONC Emanuel County in that section which in 1914 became Candler County.

1 CONT He was reared on his fathers large farm near Metter, and attended the 
1 CONC schools of then Emanuel County and later (1903) the Georgia Normal 
1 CONC College and Business Institute in Abbeville.

1 CONT In 1906 he left the farm and entered the mercantile business in Metter. 
1 CONC For many years he was active in the cotten and fertilizer business. In 
1 CONC 1910 he established the Citizens Bank of Metter, of which he served as 
1 CONC President for twenty years. In 1930 the bank was sold and merged with the 
1 CONC Bank of Candler County.

1 CONT During this period, and for years afterward, he operated Metter Supply 
1 CONC Company, which dealt in everything needed on a farm. This was one of the 
1 CONC now-vanished stores which sold wholesale and retail --- horses, 
1 CONC furniture, buggies, groceries, and hundreds of items which farmers might 
1 CONC use. He owned a farm near Metter, with the major crops being corn, 
1 CONC cotton, and tobacco.

1 CONT He was a member, and treasurer, of the New County Committee which worked 
1 CONC to create Candler County in 1914 out of Emanuel, Bulloch, and Tatnall 
1 CONC counties. He was a member of the town council, and Mayor of Metter for 
1 CONC four terms.

1 CONT He served in both the Georgia House of Representatives and the Senate. He 
1 CONC served on the Banks and Banking committees, and was appointed by Governor 
1 CONC Dorsey as a trustee to establish and create the Coastal Plain Experiment 
1 CONC Station at Tifton, where he served for eight years as Secretary/Treasurer.

1 CONT He was a member of he Metter Methodist Church and chairman of its board 
1 CONC of stewards  for twenty-five years.

1 CONT His wife, Georgia, attended Florida Southern College at Lakeland, 
1 CONC Florida. She was the pianist for the Metter Methodist Church for fifty 
1 CONC years.

1 CONT Daniel Henderson was the youngest child of Daniel and Sallie McBride 
1 CONC Henderson. He was born in 1818, and it is supposed that he was born after 
1 CONC his parents came to Georgia, but this can not be verified. He was married 
1 CONC to Fereby A. Whiddon in 1841 and had eleven children, eight boys and 
1 CONC three girls.

1 CONT He first settled on the hill just across the first branch south from 
1 CONC Gladys, on the road leading from Ocilla to Alapaha, and he lived there 
1 CONC until his first son was born. He then sold that house and bought two lots 
1 CONC of land four miles west from the present site of the city of Sycamore. 
1 CONC This was then a part of Irwin County, later Worth County, and now a part 
1 CONC of Turner county. He spent the greater part of his life at that place, 
1 CONC but later alternated between there and a home he owned in Isabella, then 
1 CONC the county seat of Worth County. Late in life he sold his home and had a 
1 CONC new home built near Ocilla, but never lived there. Poor health had him 
1 CONC move to the home of  his son-in-law, and he died in 1879. He was a Mason, 
1 CONC and was buried by them or under their direction at Brushy Creek, where he 
1 CONC now rests.

1 CONT He was in every respect a public spirited man. He was a man of broad 
1 CONC vision. He evidently saw a great future for this good land. He was well 
1 CONC educated as the advantages of that day and time would admit. He could 
1 CONC read and write, which was saying much for a person of his generation. He 
1 CONC did all he could to educate is children; but at the time he should have 
1 CONC been at this important task, the Civil War came on taking him from his 
1 CONC home and loved ones and family duties, and into the service of the 
1 CONC Southern Armies. The women and children could barely secure the scant 
1 CONC necessities of life, and had no time for school.
1 CONT
1 CONT He owned a home in Isabella, where he kept his family part of the time, 
1 CONC alternating between it and his home near Sycamore, in order that he might 
1 CONC be able to send his children to school. After school months were over, he 
1 CONC usually moved back to his farm in order that the boys might engage in the 
1 CONC work of farming. It might be of interest to say that Isabella was a small 
1 CONC country village, located eighteen miles east of Albany, and about four 
1 CONC miles northwest of Sylvester. Worth county was created in  1854, and he 
1 CONC was one of the leading spirits in creating this new county.

1 CONT He was a useful man. He represented Worth County in the legislature in 
1 CONC the following years: 1859-60. 1861-62, 1863-64, and 1875-76. The first 
1 CONC office he held was that of judge of the Inferior Court of Worth County, a 
1 CONC court of importance in that day, but which has long since been supplanted 
1 CONC by other courts.

1 CONT In 1862 he joined Company B of the 10th Georgia Battalion, which company 
1 CONC he served as captain. His first service was at Macon, Georgia, guarding 
1 CONC prisoners. He was later ordered to Virginia, and arrived there at the 
1 CONC close of the second battle of Fredricksburg. He served in the army of 
1 CONC Virginia from that time until some time in 1863, when he resigned to 
1 CONC represent Worth County in the Georgia Legislature  for the years 1863-4.

1 CONT He was a great hunter. He was the owner of a large herd of cattle, and a 
1 CONC considerable flock of sheep; however, the sheep were not very profitable 
1 CONC on account of dogs and an occasional wolf making serious inroads upon 
1 CONC them. He also was engaged in a small way in the mercantile business, but 
1 CONC that was done mostly for community service and not for profit..

1 CONT In personal appearance he was of medium height, probably six feet tall, 
1 CONC and weighed approximately 200 pounds, which he carried without effort. 
1 CONC The strength of men in that day was tested at the "Log rollings" which 
1 CONC institution is now long forgotten. Daniel could lift more at the end of a 
1 CONC hand-spike than any man in the county, and was the master of all the 
1 CONC negro slaves of the county in this feat. It is also related that he found 
1 CONC no trouble in walking along and turning somersaults, catching on his feet 
1 CONC and continuing as if nothing happened.

1 CONT He was admired by all who knew him on account of his physical perfection, 
1 CONC and he was admired and loved by all who knew him on account of his 
1 CONC willingly helping all who called on him. He was universally respected in 
1 CONC the realm of his acquaintance on account of his mental acquirements under 
1 CONC the handicaps that hindered him.

1 CONT Daniel Henderson was of Scotch Irish descent, probably being of the 
1 CONC contingent of immigrants coming into the colonies during the 18th 
1 CONC century, and settling in the mountains of Virginia. From that place, thet 
1 CONC gradually trickled down through the mountains of North Carolina, 
1 CONC Tennessee, and Georgia. It is not known whether he came from Scotland or 
1 CONC whether his family came to America and was born in this country.

1 CONT It is known that he came from the State of North Carolina, sometime in 
1 CONC the 19th century, probably before 1810, and settled in Irwin County, 
1 CONC Georgia about nine miles southeast of Ocilla. He was at the time married 
1 CONC to Sallie McBride Henderson, whom he had previously married in North 
1 CONC Carolina.

1 CONT They were among the early settlers of this section. The indians had yet 
1 CONC to be removed from Georgia; the wolves howled about the cabin doors at 
1 CONC night; and deer and other game were to be had for the taking.
